YEAR TWO, Production Skills: Art and Entertainment Technology

In the second program year, participants will explore IT applications in art and entertainment, and how these applications spill into the urban landscape. Students will learn more Robotics, Animation and Digital Audio technologies.

Semester 1, Animatronics and Animation Technology

Using Cricket technology, students will learn strategies for design and control of motor driven systems. Students will learn about the art of animatronics and what it takes to make a robotic creation. Students will also engage in Computer Animation projects, using Adobe Flash to design and create animations of their choosings. Students will learn the difference between frame-by-frame animation and Computer-based keyframe animations. See projects from Year 2, Semester 1

Semester 2, Music Production: Sound All Around

After successful completion of this module students will be able to identify and understand the ways in which digital and communications technologies are used in music production and distribution, as well as the implications of these technologies on the industry. In this module, students, working in groups, will record an original piece of music, and will then use MIDI communication protocol to synthesize beats and rhythms, and mix the final musical tracks using digital music editing software.. Student CDs will be distributed to SoBRO staff and available to the community, with youth driving outreach and distribution efforts. Student project work will be accompanied by field trips to our production company program partners, including Viacom and ITP’s Sound Production lab.

SoBRO TEC will offer a 7-week summer engagement each year. To participate in a summer experience, students will be required to participate in at least one prior workshop. The summer component will be a combination of internship opportunities with various organizations around New York City and a series of field trips for the students to attend.
