Year 1, Semester 1: Fall 2005

Moussilimatou and Djatougbe worked on a project called "Windy Subway". This is a system for people who cannot hear or see to be able to know when the subway is coming. The fan seen here rights stronger and stronger as the subway approaches. When people feel the wind getting stronger, they know that the subway is coming and get ready to board the train. Maria, Joanne, and William designed and built a door for the subway, which enables disabled people or mothers with strollers to easily enter the subway system. The main concern of this group was that people in these circumstances had to talk to the person in the booth to gain access to the subway. The group noted that sometimes there is no person working at the booth, and it is impossible to get in. This door slides up as the subway card as swiped to allow for easy access for wheelchairs and strollers. To download their powerpoint presentation, click here.

Matt and Ibrahim worked on a project to enable people to get into the subway more rapidly. They devised a system where all you have to do to enter the subway is put your finger on the finerprint device and it will let you in. This allows for less stalling and faster access to the trains. Mudassar is seen here working on his project called "Trains Comin' Through". Mudassar worked with two other students (Josefina and Jonatthan, not pictured) on a car that tells you when the train is approaching. This car travels up and down the subway platform and warns people when the train is approaching using lights and sounds. To download this group's powerpoint presentation, click here.

Other projects from this semester included a subway map that has traveling lights, tracking each subway train, so that you know when the train is coming, and which train will come first. To download this presentation, click here.
There was also a project called "Subway Fortunes" that tells you your fortune for the day as you swipe your subway card. Options included "you will will the lottery today" or "you will fall in love today". To download this presentation, click here.

Student Jose Reyes shows off his "earring" that he created using the Cricket. The actual project created by Jose was a ring for a cell phone. The ring included lights and sounds.

Along with fellow student Abraham Garcia, Jose also created a neighborhood website. Jose concentrated primarily on parks and recreation within the South Bronx, while Abraham concentrated on recreation and food. To view the website, visit this site:

Summer 2006

Students were engaged in the summer component for seven weeks. The first week consisted of orientations, internship assignments, getting familiar with the work that their assigned company does, and basic evaluations. For the next six weeks, students had the following schedule: They spent Monday mornings at SoBRO, working on life skills with their youth advocate. They spent Tuesday and Thursday going to their internship assignments and Wednesdays going to an educational field trip at a museum or university. On Monday afternoons, the students spent three hours at Columbia, learning basic and advanced Microsoft Excel, and one lesson on the 3D modeling program MAYA.

During the first few lessons, students did an exercise counting and predicting colors of M&M's. They mapped their predictions vs. real values with graphs. Students learned how to write formulas in Excel. The following are a few examples of students' work. Click to open or right-click to download the Excel file:

During the next few lessons, students calculated their summer budgets, making a spreadsheet of their incomes and expenses. They then graphed and made charts of the results. The following are a few examples of students' work. Click to open or right-click to download the Excel file:

The students also made 3D art using a program called MAYA. The following are a few of their digital creations:

Year 2, Semester 1: Fall 2006

During this semester, students learned how to use the professional program of Adobe Flash. Flash is an industry standard and is used to make professional websites, animations and games. It is a great skill to have and is very popular in the job market.

The following are some of the student projects. Click on each one to bring up the animation.

Jonatthan scanned his drawings and created a story around his own writings

Estefania worked in partnership with two other students to create the following animation about friendship.

Sahara and Iesha made a cute animation about lions, tigers, and... palm pilots.

Ibrahim created an animation based on the question of whether or not wrestling is fake.

Year 2, Semester 2: Spring 2007

There were two different classes this semester. One class of students expanded their knowledge of Adobe Flash by learning the programming language of Actionscript and making games using this language. The other class learned Digital Audio and made their own soundtracks using the a audio editing software called Reason.

Summer 2007

Students were engaged in the summer component for seven weeks. The first week was reserved for orientations and introductions. For the next six weeks, students had the following schedule: They spent Monday afternoons at New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program. They spent Tuesday and Thursday going to their internship assignments and Wednesdays going to an educational field trip at a museum or university.

This summer, four students participated in the East Tremont Internship Project. This project helped the larger SoBRO project of doing retail analysis on the area of East Tremont Ave. Students gathered data and took surveys of what kind of stores people would like to see in that area. They took pictures of existing stores and made a website about it. View the website here.
Other internships included DAH Consulting, Sony Wonder Technology Labs, and New York University.

On Monday afternoon, students took a Digital Video class at NYU. They came up with a concept for a commercial, videotaped, and edited the entire movie. Click here to view the final movie.

Year 3, Semester 1: Fall 2007

In the fall of the third year, students learned how to make 3D models in Google Sketchup. Students explored buildings around the South Bronx, made sketches of these buildings and then modeled their own creations. Students incorporated concepts in Math, Science and Architecture in order to make their buildings have precise dimensions and be designed to scale. Student projects ranged from their dream homes to schools to basketball courts.

The following are pictures of students at work and their creations:
