SoBRO TEC is an NSF funded program and a collaboration between three organizations - SoBRO, Vision Education & Media and Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).

SoBRO TEC’s focus is to help participants develop technological fluidity, providing them with an IT foundation on which to build in their future careers or academic work and broadening the entry points into IT-related fields. The program will make use of the surrounding urban environment (that of New York City, their neighborhood, their homes) to enable participants to understand tech-driven information and communication systems.

Students will identify the uses of technology in the design of their built environment . Through use of Cricket Robotics, Blogging, Website Design and Development, Digital Video, Digital Audio, and 3D modeling systems, participants will not only learn about IT applications but will be physicall involved in manipulating these applications to create their own projects.

SoBRO will recruit students from high schools in the South Bronx. Each semester (six times throughout the three-year initiative) SoBRO will recruit 30 students per semester to participate in the program; some students will participate in the program semester after semester, while others might join for only one semester. We estimate that we will serve up tp 200 participants over the course of the program. There will also be summer opportunities, set in a 7-week period where students will intern with various organizations around New York City and have a series of field trips to attend.

Students participate in the SoBRO TEC program three times a week. They come in twice for the IT portion of the program, and they come in once a week for a "Life Skills" class, in which they learn real-world skills such as portfolio making, resume writing and job interviewing skills. This course is taught by the youth advocate. Students can take the class Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with Tuesdsay being the "Life Skills" day, or Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Wednesday being that day. Classes are held at SoBRO (555 Bergen St. in the South Bronx)
