The Pyramids of Ancient Egypt

The Egyptian Pyramids are the

oldest members of the ancient

wonders. The largest Pyramid

is at Giza called the Great

Pyramid. The Pyramids were

built as tombs or burial

places for the Egyptian

kings. Their bodies would be

put in the Pyramids because

the Egyptians believed in an

after-life. They buried the

kings in these Pyramids with

all their treasures.

The word “sphinx”, which

means “strangler”, was first

given by the Greeks to a

fabulous creature which had

the head of a woman, the

body of a lion and the wings

of a bird. In Egypt, there

are numerous sphinxes,

usually with the head of a

king wearing his headdress

and the body of a lion. The

Great Sphinx is believed to

be the most immense stone

sculpture in the round ever

made by man. However, it

must be noted that the Sphinx

is not an isolated monument

and that it must be examined

in the context of its

surroundings. The material of

Sphinx is the limestone

bedrock of what geologists

call the Muqqatam

formation, which originated

fifty million years ago.
